Do I have to come to meetings?No. But we meet every other Tuesday evening after work if you would like to come and meet your fellow unionists. Can I be fired for joining a union?No. Unions are legal in Virginia. It is a “right to work” state which means in plain English that you can hold a job whether you join a union or not. If we can’t collective bargain or strike, what good will a union do?There is strength and safety in numbers. Employees have a louder voice when they join together. Representation in Richmond. SUUVA/CWA is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, who has a huge presence in Richmond. They can lobby the legislature and the governor about issues affecting state employees. A large, international union, Communications Workers of America, is behind you with close to one million members worldwide. A union can help workers voice their concerns about wages and benefits, discrimination/racism on the job, outsourcing to outside contractors while putting our own workers out of work, parking issues, mistreatment by supervisors. A union can be a resource for workers in the cases of grievances, whether it be for support or to guide you through the grievance process. Once I join, do I have to be a member forever?No, you can give up your membership at any time.
