SUUVA/CWA HistoryPosted: Tuesday August 13, 2002SUUVA is here because of a core group of diehard Labor Action Group members-staff, students, and faculty, along with an extended family of supporters, came together, stuck together, and demonstrated to the UVA community that organizing works. Below are some of the accomplishments that helped lay the groundwork for SUUVA. 1997LAG-sponsored Teach-In with the Labor Movement, including Ralph Nader, Richard Trumka, and Barbara Prear, chair of the Housekeepers Association at UNC, Chapel Hill. 1998LAG launches it’s living wage campaign, demanding at least $8 an hour for all UVA workers. In doing this, LAG also put the living wage issue on the table for the city and county workers. 1999Charlottesville City Council grants workers a living wage. Since then, many local groups have joined in making this a hot button issue for private as well as public employees. City Council has now passed more extensive ordinance to include contract workers. 2000UVA raises starting wages from under $6.50 per hour to over $8.00 per hour. This does not include contract workers, and UVA refuses to acknowledge either the influence of LAG or the principle of a living wage. Nevertheless, it is an extraordinary victory. 2000Governor Gilmore’s atrocious new pay plan is rolled out. LAG issues a sizzling report criticizing the plan as management driven and inadequately funded. 2001LAG advocates for the fired Hospital Nine, scapegoats in the psychiatric ward scandal. Five are eventually rehired and the others won substantial cash settlement. It was within this last time frame that classified staff of LAG came together and began thinking about organizing an organization just for staff. Forming a union was always in our minds but until now, we hadn’t realized how important it was for us to affiliate. After seeing what happened to the Hospital Nine, we decided the time was now. January 2002After talking with several unions, we decided to affiliate with Communications Workers of America, a large international union with close to one million members. At that point we had 10 members. May 2002International Workers Day—SUUVA/CWA opened a local office, home to a full-time organizer.
