AREA'S LARGEST EMPLOYER EXPANDS-C'VILLE WEEKLY, AUGUST 14, 2007Posted: Tuesday August 14, 2007Area’s Largest Employer Expands BY DAVID MOLTZ 19,487 The number of us employed by UVA. It’s expected to increase by at least 300 this year. One out of every five of us who work works for UVA. If that wasn’t enough, now the University is looking to hire even more employees, from those who are both “physically capable” and “able to read and write” to those with a Juris Doctor degree and a “distinguished record of legal scholarship.” With the arrival of the Class of 2011, the largest in its history, the University plans to fill 300 openings to accommodate the new students. The vacant positions run the gamut from temporary grounds and housekeepers to the deanships of two of the University’s largest schools. In other words, there’s something for nearly every skill level and professional ambition. Want a front-row seat for Cavalier basketball this season? Coach Dave Leitao is looking for an assistant men’s basketball coach. Wondering if your mad French horn skills might ever score you a job? The Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra is looking for a principal horn player to offer lessons to beginning and experienced students. Maybe you want to follow in the footsteps of former arts and sciences dean and now new University of Richmond President Ed Ayers? For the past eight months the University has been looking for the perfect candidate to manage its largest school and spearhead its $3 billion Capital Campaign. According to a recent study by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, the University employs 19,487 of the area’s 95,300 nonfarm payroll employees. During the academic year, the University employs around 12,900 full- and part-time salaried workers. Since the Center’s last major study in 1990, the number of those employees rose by almost 32 percent. The remainder of the University’s workforce is made up of 700 medical residents and nearly 5,800 hourly workers. In 2004, the University’s total spending on employee compensation and benefits was $929 million.
