After nearly four decades, the University of Virginia is ceasing printing of its newsletter Inside UVA and moving its articles to an online version.

The newsletter – written and produced by UVa’s Office of Public Affairs since 1971 – ended with Friday’s edition.

A front-page letter from UVa spokeswoman Carol Wood said the university opted to end Inside UVA because of state budget cuts and the university’s increasing emphasis on sustainability.

UVa was directed by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine to return $9.5 million of its state funding to help close the state’s $641 million budget shortfall. UVa announced in October that it would cut spending by deferring purchases and maintenance, eliminating vacant positions, curtailing research spending and other measures.

UVa distributed roughly 14,500 copies of Inside UVA every other Friday during the academic year. By eliminating its publication, the university will save an estimated $75,000 annually. No staff members will lose their jobs.

“We are going to redeploy our people to make our Web presence even more robust,” Wood said Monday.

Replacing the print edition of UVa’s newsletter will be a subscription-based e-mail that will include university news releases, a list of news articles mentioning UVa and important announcements. The e-mail news report will launch Jan. 15 to mark the beginning of the spring semester.

Though details of Inside UVA’s demise were confirmed Monday, university spokesman Jeff Hanna said details about how the budget cuts will affect other departments have not yet been announced.
