UVA OVERHAULS BENEFITS FOR EMPLOYEE EDUCATION-THE DAILY PROGRESS, JULY 29, 2008

UVa overhauls benefits for employee education

Published: July 29, 2008

Every academic division employee at the University of Virginia with at least one year of benefits-eligible service, including part-time service, can now receive $2,000 a year to cover the cost of taking classes related to their careers.

The money can be spent at any regionally accredited school and a greater variety of classes can be taken.

The new benefit replaces a benefits system that required employees to pay up front for classes and be reimbursed later, a university official said recently.

Now the benefit payment will be added to the next paycheck that occurs at least 10 days after employees submit the proper paperwork.
The benefit can be used to pay for thousands of career-related classes ranging from vocational to graduate offerings at public and private colleges.

The guidelines for a class to be considered “work related” are more broadly defined than in the past policy, a university official said.

Classes must be taken for credit and may not exceed seven undergraduate credits — or six graduate credits — per semester. The courses must also be completed with a grade of C- or better, or class costs must be repaid.
